Voices from the Arctic is a solo exhibition by London-based animator and illustrator Jess Mountfield. Centred around a hand-painted animated film and interactive postcard wall, the exhibition combines animation, scientific testimony and immersive Arctic soundscapes to explore how we understand places undergoing irreversible environmental change.
Developed following two research residencies in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the project draws on interviews with fifteen scientists working across glaciology, geology, biology and microbiology. Moving beyond familiar Arctic imagery, Mountfield offers a personal perspective on a landscape in transition, exploring the intersection of scientific observation, emotional connection and environmental urgency.
Jess Mountfield is an animator, illustrator and lecturer based in London. Her work spans film, publishing and installation, often exploring themes of science, ecology, time and place through hand-crafted animation and documentary storytelling.
Her films have screened at more than fifty international festivals and have received awards including Best Short Form from the Royal Television Society and Best Commissioned Film from the London International Animation Festival. With backgrounds in animation and anthropology, Mountfield brings an interdisciplinary approach to visual storytelling and environmental research.
